MY BOOK REVIEW
GIFTED HANDS: BY DR. BEN CARSON,M.D
First things first: It goes without saying that this book by Dr. Benjamin Carson (first doctor to separate the Siamese/conjoined twins) is an extremely wonderful and mightily inspirational book. Like the thousands of its readers, I too have learnt several things from this book, broadly classified into two main groups:
What I learnt as a Human Being- No matter what, one has to be a good person first. Dr. Carson aptly demonstrates this. Whether it was his attitude towards his ward clerks and aides or his composed and unspiteful reaction to the discrimination he would have to face, he always remained a humble human being.
What I learnt as someone building the base of his career- Like others, I too want a flourishing career. Dr. Carson shows how that can be made possible through hard work, dedication and perseverance. Whether you want to make it big as a doctor, lawyer, writer, singer or priest, you need to be highly determined & focused from the beginning itself.
But what is the book about? Good question! Well, the book is an account by Dr. Carson about his struggles throughout his journey from his childhood in inner-city Detroit to a world renowned neurosurgeon, overcoming all sorts of odds in the process and reaping the benefits of his hard work. Filled with interesting anecdotes and incidents of his life, the book sure is an engaging read.
The most inspiring person in this book is perhaps Sonya Carson, Dr. Ben’s mother. Inspite of having studied only through third grade, her mature and modern views on education, learning and upbringing remain eye-opening even for us today. The numerous sacrifices she makes for her children, and the several sacrifices that her young boys make for her are immensely heartwarming. There is no doubt that whatever Dr. Carson is today, he owes it big time to his mother.
My Fave Chapters: The chapter in which Sonya decides to bring a complete change in the timetable of her children by introducing or rather imposing new but harsh methods of learning is highly interesting. It never fails to charge any student to get up and actually work. Also, the chapter about Dr. Carson’s Chemistry Test is extremely intriguing. (I do believe in the forces mentioned in this chapter, and besides I too disliked Chemistry once upon a time…maybe that’s why I could relate to this chapter.)
The USP of this book: The many many many inspirational quotes peppered thoughout the book always call upon the reader to stop, reflect and get inspired. Hopefully, some of you might grab this book and get inspired too.
After all, anyone with even “half a brain” wouldn’t miss such a golden opportunity…!!!!
P.S if you haven’t read the book, or you do not know about Dr. Ben Carson, M.D, then you probably won’t get the last line… ;P
MY MOVIE REVIEW
DON 2: The King is Back
It is extremely essential to mention that I seemed to be the only one in the entire theatre who liked the movie as the others were blatantly cursing the makers and actors of the film for making them go through the so called pain. But where I was concerned, overall I found the movie very interesting. Some of the reasons are:
ü The Plot- It was fairly an engaging one. The ending was not that dramatic, but it did work well with the film. (I missed a certain ‘registration no.’ on a motorcycle but was told about it by my co-viewers later.)
ü SRK was sheer dynamite. He truly does the anti hero thing full justice (something he has admitted on record.) Piggy Chops i.e Priyanka Chopra as Roma was impressive.
ü The chemistry between the two leads was sizzling and scorching and blazing…truly a complex relationship of hatred, attraction and even affection. Boman Irani was a fantastic villain and truly hatable. A certain guest appearance was really surprising.
ü Some of the action sequences were mindblowing. Berlin as a location was awesome! (SRK is the 3rd int’l actor to shoot in Germany after Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise)
ü Songs like Zara Dil Ko… and Hai Ye Maya… - Quite catchy & hummable songs. Wonderful to hear Usha Uthup after a long break (though I did happen to meet her during November 2011.)
At the same time there were a few things that kind of held the movie back:
´ The dialogues could have and should have been better. The Rajat Arora like dialogues of OUATIM would have taken the film to a whole new level.
´ Lara Dutta (Bhupathi) – A mind blowing actress completely sidelined and wasted. No doubt she looked gorgeous, but a few substantial or strong and catchy dialogues would have been enough to do her justice.
´ Lack of songs- It seemed to be a pre-planned decision to have less no. of songs (I know it’s obvious but still.) a couple of songs would have made many an audience comfortably digest the film.
´ Dushaman Meraa – I personally found the song okayish. The graphics were very distasteful and sad (that’s all I can say about it.)
All in all, the movie was worth the wait. Perhaps the expectations of people had been too high due to which they were let down…but other than that the film was quite good!
GOOGLY!!!!
1.) Towards the end of the film, a scene involving Priyanka Chopra shows a certain guard killed. And guess the name of the guard…it’s Harman!
2.) There is a scene in which Jabar (played by Nawab Shah), a killer based in Germany calls Don. Surprisingly, the number appearing on Don’s phone strts with +991… which is supposedly the code of India!

IT'S COMPLICATED- DIARY ENTRY DURING ONE OF THOSE PRE-EXAM DAYS...
Hello Everyone...! Just added another one of my previously published articles. (talk about laziness) Hope you like it!
Exams are approaching…and as usual, I am NOT studying. Ask me why? Well, I have a reason, but it’s too difficult to put down on paper, it’s too complicated. I sit in the front row of my class….but still can’t concentrate. Why? I don’t know…..it’s complicated. At home, the study table in my room is placed right in front of my bed. So, on my way to the study table, an invisible hand below my bed just pulls me and I drop like a rock on my bed. But instead of dozing off, I’ll just be staring at the rotating fan above that moves like the hands of a clock, and reminds me that time is running, and I am limping. But still, I WILL NOT study. Ask me why? Well, as I said, it’s complicated. I have loads of homework, tonnes of tests and lots of other things to stress about like hmm…hmmm…( I just can’t remember them now!) somehow I exert myself to get up from the bed and move to the study table, but my legs (or maybe my stomach) automatically take me to my kitchen. I am craving for something sweet ….so I have a KitKat. But it turns out to be too sweet (almost sickly sweet), so I empty a bag of spicy Lays into my mouth. It turns out to be too spicy, so I empty a bottle of Cola down my gullet. All this RICH food makes me lethargic and grumpy. I want to play outside, but it’s so hot that I don’t feel too. The weather seems to be my sworn enemy as the day I am free, it is hot. But the day I busy, it turns heavenly! Anyways….it’s dinner time, but I hardly chew my food. I just swallow it. I go to my bedroom after dinner planning to finish that physics chapter that had been pestering me since the past few weeks. But on the other hand, I feel that I have studied enough throughout the day, and so I go to sleep. My conscience doesn’t prick me, it punctures me! But still, I am least affected. I know I am wrong, but I won’t do anything…ask me why…well even I can’t explain, it’s complicated!!!

7 Khoon Maaf !!!!
Hi Everyone! i decided to include a few of my articles from another publication in this blog. This particular one talks about the subjects studied by all those Indian students (who have opted for Science in particular.) Hope you like it...:)
Priyanka Chopra may have got a chance to murder 7 people and still get away...but are we as lucky too? No...I don’t mean to go around murdering people. But given a chance, I would really love to slay down 7 of the many devils of our curriculum!
1.) R.D Sharma- 4 syllables that are powerful enough to bring a tornado in a student’s life! For years, R.D Sharma (and Sh. Ish Kapur) has been a bane in every Math-student’s life (exceptions excluded.) Someone should really stop this person! Sharmaji, there are 943,638,373,893,739 ‘fun’ things to do in this world other than publishing these sadistic books of your’s... year after year (and since you are sooo good at maths, I am sure you will be able to read that number.) At least publish a key to your books...you may earn a few blessing then...plus a large profit!
2.) IUPAC naming- Grade 9 and below, you won’t know what I am talking about, & trust me, you don’t want to!! There is nothing more cumbersome than following the rules laid down by a group of depressed & bored people (i.e IUPAC) who have nothing to do with their lives except complicate it. I don’t get it...why can’t we use the derived method of nomenclature which is any day more creative & witty? For eg.) Isn’t Angelic Acid a better name than (Z)-2-methylbut-2-enoic acid??? Or Traumatic Acid better than Dodec-2-enedioic acid??
3.) Archaic English- It lies beyondst mine grasp why one shouldst readst a tale/rhyme written in an ancient manner merely on grounds of the ambiguous and imprecise sentence “It is beautiful.” What’s beautiful in this sire? Y cnt v just use r SMS language? Isn’t it more economical? Plus v will b able 2 adhere 2 d ‘strict’ world limit too (for once!)
4.) Greek letters in Physics- Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Theta, Phi..... wasn’t trigonometry in Physics enough that we now have Greek too? Seriously, whoever said, “It’s all Greek to me” must have been a frustrated Physics student....like me (and many others too.)
5.) Biology Dissections & Facts- No please...in the name of God! Wasn’t killing your students (who are anyways very few) enough that you now want to kill innocent animals too. I know cockroaches have survived Ice Age, but that doesn’t give us the licence to kill them now! And yes...the so called important facts are a wonder too. Did you know that a spongilla has a Leuconoid stage of progression when water in it moves through choanocytes? Isn’t that amazing? How could we ever live our life without knowing this wonderful fact????????
6.) Geography- First, go on a long road trip. Pick up all the rivers, mountains, rocks, soils, flora, fauna, crops and even the road itself and combine them into one book. There, you have got one of the most lethal weapons of studentkind- A Geography Textbook.
7.) Political Science- Seriously, what’s the use of learning such rules and laws that are always on the verge of changing? What may be taught to me today, may change after a while.....so why break my head over it? Besides, for the 17 years, 7 months and few days I have been alive, politics (and ‘’political scientists”) have rarely been in good light....so why bother?
Well, I know that I won’t be able to eliminate these 7 monsters. But the crux of the matter is that how absurd and ridiculous some of the things we study are (well, at least to us!)
As for now, I better look for a hiding place for a good 7 years before I am given a mouthful worth remebering for 7 lifetimes by none other than 'THEM.'

STEPPING INTO THE BLOGOSPHERE....
Well, so here I am...!!! After several failed attempts (due to frustrating computer problems) I now have my very own blog. Now, the first question I would like to answer to my presently ZERO followers is: Why the hell do I want to blog? Ummm...good question! So here is the answer broken into a few points:
1.) A blog is a highly convenient medium for me to write for a ‘larger’ number of people.
2.) I want some of my work to be known.
3.) Blogging is one thing I have always wanted to do before I die (with the preposterous hype regarding the year 2012, it probably is going to be very soon.)
